Another new friend!!

I am already looking forward to summer so that Tommy and I can get together with our friends!  In the past two months alone, he has three new friends with his girlfriend, baby Gisella, being born just last night!!

Today we went to visit Gisella and I am already counting down the time when we can get together!  She is so precious and such a little chunk at 9lbs 7oz!!  I just love those chubby babies though...especially after starting off with a skinny, wrinkly one!

Tommy has been really good with these new babies so far!  I love how he tries to figure them out but (most of the time) in a gentle way.  He will not have a sibling from mom for a very long time so he might as well get his practice with babies through his friends. :)
Tommy wasn't so sure at first, he is not a fan of having to share his mom.  :)

"Coming Home" Day

February 9th was an amazing day because it was the day that Tommy entered this world but it was also one of the most difficult days of my life.  After fear and uncertainty about how I would even be delivering Tommy as he was not responding well on the monitors, Tommy was born via c-section at 1:42pm but our emotional roller coaster did not end there.  We sat in recovery for hours trying to get his sugar levels to stabilize and to try to get him to eat....both were unsuccessful and he was ultimately admitted to the NICU for 13 days.  Those NICU days were long and very lonely at times as I sat there just wishing that my baby would start to eat so that I could take him home.  There have never been explanations as to why he wasn't eating.  He wasn't a preemie and I had a very healthy pregnancy....those who saw me knew that I was eating for two...and then some!!   It was difficult sitting there with my baby hooked to monitors with a feeding tube and for several days an IV also questioning why he was sick and if I had somehow caused this.

Amazingly enough though, at 6pm on February 18th....Tommy started to eat and hasn't slowed down since!!  I think this is funny because this was a full moon!  He kept up his appetite and was able to come home on February 21st.

I remember that day so clearly because while Feb 9th was his birthday, February 21st was the day that I was able to be his mom without wires, tubes and nurse's care.  To me, that was when he was finally my baby to care for and raise as I wanted to without following guidelines set by the hospital.   I remember walking out of the hospital thinking that the sun had never been brighter nor had I ever been happier than at that moment.  It was a deep sigh of relief knowing that he was healthy and I would finally get to experience motherhood.  :)

Because I had our upcoming Kindergarten parent meeting that night (my co-teacher was on maternity leave so I had to do it alone...I did mention though that it should be easy since last year I did the meeting while in labor) I took the day off to spend with Tommy.  We didn't do much except play, snuggle and nap....it was a perfect day!! :)

Tommy's coming home outfit!!  He's ready!

So excited! No wires, no tubes, no nurses!!
We're home!! He's so tiny!!!
Such a big boy now!
Last year he would stay where I set him...now he's on the move!

He came home in this hat!

Love this boy!! :)

Tommy's First Haircut!

I have loved Tommy's curls....even the crazy hair days.....but the time came when it was time to cut his hair.  I waited for this until he was one....mom was just not ready to do it any earlier!  Now that he is officially a toddler, it's time for his big boy haircut.  Although I miss his silly curls, he is such a handsome boy and looks so much older now!  What a stud!

My wild haired baby boy!

Tommy was not a fan of sitting in the cars so he sat on mom's lap.

"It's not so bad!"

"I don't know about this anymore!"

He was getting tired of the haircut at the end.

My big boy!!!

Tommy's First Birthday Party!

We had Tommy's first birthday party on Sunday February 12th.  When he was first born, I used to call him my little peanut but as he chunked out, he quickly became my little monkey!!  So to celebrate this first year, I went with a "Jungle Monkey" theme.  :)

Because my family is so large, I decided to have his party at my school so that we could use the gym and cafeteria....seemed a better alternative than having everyone run in and out of my house.  Unfortunately since he was born in the middle of winter, that means more sickness and a lot of my friends and family weren't able to make it because of sick kiddos.  I was very happy with those who were able to come and celebrate this special event with us!  It was very touching to see those who cared enough about us to give up a few hours of their Sunday to visit.  :)

It's amazing to think that my baby is now a toddler!  I laughed it off when everyone said that it goes so fast but it truly did!!! :)

These two will have many Elmo playdates I'm sure!!

One year ago, Tommy was Leland's size....that just seems unreal! :)

With so many new baby friends, Tommy needs to practice his gentle skills. :)

Quite possibly more whipped cream than Jello. :)

Happy Birthday Monkey!!

His "tree"

Kisses for mommy....he wanted out of his seat too!!

Tommy loved having so much space to push his walker all around!

Monkey cupcakes!!

It's been quite a year!

Love this boy!!

He was asleep in less than 5 minutes. :)
Tommy's Invites

The picture didn't scan well but this was on the back of the invites.  The quote was on the white board outside the NICU and it has stuck with me ever since I first saw it.  :)

Tommy's First Birthday!!

February 9, 2010 was an amazing day because it was the day that I got to finally meet my little boy!  I joke with many of my friends and family that the day I went into labor was the longest day ever with morning staff meeting, full day of teaching, parent/teacher conferences then incoming kindergarten parent meeting which meant I didn't get home until about 9pm...whew!!  I have had a few of this year's parents actually comment to me about how miserable and large I looked at that meeting last year.  :)

To celebrate this special day, Tommy and I took the day off and celebrated together.  Here is a look at our day in pictures. :)
We made cookies for daycare, EA staff and the NICU staff....Tommy had one for breakfast...only for the birthday boy!

Cookie Monster!

No school means a bottle and Sesame Street at home with mom in the morning. :)

We went into school so my kids could sing Happy Birthday.  Some even brought him cards and books. :)

At the doctor's office for his one year....no nap yet means a worn out baby boy!!

We stopped at the NICU to visit and take birthday treats.

Happy Birthday baby boy!

Exploring his cupcake.

Trying to figure the cupcake out.

Grandpa put his bottle in the frosting to get him to try it.  :)

He finally tried the cupcake.....and got it everywhere! :)

Cupcake coma!

Grandma, Grandpa and Uncle Joe came over for dinner and to help celebrate!

Clean but so tired.

Goodnight birthday boy!  Mommy loves you so much!! :)
